Michael Young is a perfect fit at first base

Finding someone to play first base for the 2014 season has been atop the Milwaukee Brewers shopping list since the beginning of the offseason, and it is now time for the Brewers to finally check it off their list.  While they have explored options including resigning Corey Hart or trading for Ike Davis, nothing has happened yet.  One solution could be veteran infielder Michael Young.

The 14-year veteran is 37 years old, and although his great years are behind him, he still has enough left in the tank to be a solid contributor next season.  Young split last season with the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers showing his ability to still hit for average and get on base (.279/.335/.395).  While Young has played on the left side of the infield for most of his career, he has experience playing anywhere in the infield including first base.

Bringing in Young would not only fill their opening at first, but it would also allow the Brewers to give Hunter Morris more at-bats and time to develop in Triple-A.  He would also be a great clubhouse guy, who could teach the young Brewer hitters a few things about being successful big league hitters.

In this stage of Young's career he can still be a solid contributor, while playing on a short term deal for an affordable price.  He solves the Brewers first base issue for the short-term while the Brewers wait for their young first base prospects to be major league ready.  Signing Young makes so much sense, that the Brewers need to make sure that he is wearing their jersey next season.

Is Yasiel Puig Deserving of an All-Star Selection?

Since Yasiel Puig was called up to the Los Angeles Dodgers, roughly three weeks ago, he has become an instant star, putting up insane numbers, while energizing the city of L.A.  His performance has many people calling for him to be selected to the All-Star Game.

He has posted eye-popping numbers in his first 20 games (.442 avg., 7 HRs, 14 RBIs, .476 OBP), and deserves to be on the National League All-Star roster.  While it will be a hard decision for National League manager Bruce Bochy to choose Puig over other deserving veteran players, it is a move he needs to make.

Yasiel Puig is someone that fans want to see in the Midsummer Classic, and he would create buzz and excitement unlike any other player selected to the game. Yasiel Puig is the hottest player in the game right now, and he has demonstrated that he is worthy of an All-Star Game selection.

Carlos Quentin Thinks He is a WWE Wrestler

San Diego Padres' slugger Carlos Quentin rushed the mound on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers and wrestled right-handed pitcher Zack Greinke to the ground.  This lead to a benches clearing brawl, and left Greinke with a left collarbone injury.

This happened in the sixth inning during a 3-2 count, with Quentin being hit in the shoulder.  Usually the blame would be all on the pitcher, but in this case it should be put completely on Quentin.  Quentin has been hit 116 times over his career, with a few occasions because it was intentional, but mostly because he crowds the plate.  There was no reason to believe Greinke was intently throwing at him in a one run game and Quentin needs to be punished for his actions.

Zack Greinke is mostly likely going to miss around two months due to this injury and it will definitely derail the Dodgers season.  Suspending Carlos Quentin for 15 games without pay is only fair because he charged the mound and injured an opposing pitcher, and this injury will force Greinke to miss around 15 starts.

Major League Baseball needs to make a statement with this suspension and show other players that you cannot get away with intentionally injuring an opposing player by suspending Quentin for 15 games.

How long do you think Carlos Quentin should be suspended?  Comment below with your thoughts.

2013 MLB Predictions: National League West

Every team starts the season tied for first place, and in baseball anything is possible.  For the players and fans there are hopes, and even for some, dreams, that their team will be a top their division at the end of the season. With Opening Day less than a month away, here is how I see the National League West shaping out to be:

1st -  San Francisco Giants:

The Giants have been the best team in the MLB over the last three seasons, but this season will be their toughest, with the improvement of both the Dodgers and Diamondbacks.  This offseason the Giants made key moves by resigning players from last seasons World Series team.

Marco Scutaro, Angel Pagan and Jeremy Affeldt were all brought back on multi-year deals, and the Giants also added free agent outfielder, Andres Torres, to platoon in left field with Gregor Blanco.  With these key transactions, along with their stellar pitching rotation, the Giants will win a competitive NL West.

2nd - Arizona Diamondbacks:

This offseason the Diamondbacks finally pulled the trigger on trading Justin Upton to the Braves for a solid package of players, led by Martin Prado.  They also traded away highly touted pitching prospect Trevor Bauer in a three team deal, that landed them shortstop prospect Didi Gregorius.

Even though both of these moves improved their team, the biggest addition was signing pitcher Brandon McCarthy to a two year, $15.5 million deal.  When healthy, McCarthy has ace potential, and he will improve the D-backs pitching staff.  The Diamondbacks will surprise many people, and expect them to be competing for a NL Wild Card the entire season.

3rd - Los Angeles Dodgers:

The Los Angeles Dodgers spent a huge amount of money this offseason, and they will find out that money does not buy everything.  They signed pitcher, Zack Greinke to a mega deal worth $147 million over six years, and left handed Korean pitcher, Ryu Hyun-jin to a six year, $36 million deal.  This will improve the Dodgers rotation, but it will not guarantee success.

Even though the Dodgers have added many quality players since last seasons' trade deadline, injuries and the lack of team chemistry will hurt their chances at winning the pennant.

4th - San Diego Padres:

The Padres had a very quiet offseason, besides signing pitchers Freddy Garcia and Tyson Ross, and they will be relying on their deep farm system to improve their big league club.  The Padres are in rebuilding mode, and they will not be competing for a playoff spot within the next few seasons.

5th - Colorado Rockies:

The Colorado Rockies had the worst pitching rotation last season, and they did very little to improve it this winter.  They brought in some veteran pitchers, including Chris Volstad, Jeff Francis, and Miguel Batista, but they will not help a young, inexperienced pitching staff.  The one positive move the Rockies made was, trading for relief pitcher Wilton Lopez to improve their bullpen.

Troy Tulowitzki is returning from injury and the Rockies pitching staff has another year of experience, but it will not be enough to keep them out of the cellar in the NL West.
